The fourth quarter (October to December) of 2021 recorded the highest number of registered deaths contributing 2,320 or 30.3% to the total. It had a 40.6% increase from the same quarter of last year with 1,398 records. The third quarter (August to September) closely followed with 2,125 registered deaths contributing 27.7% to the total. It had a 57.1% increase from the same quarter of the last year’s figure of 1,353, which was the biggest percent change among all quarters of 2021 (see Figure 1).

Moreover, October had the highest number of registered deaths contributing 1,121 or 14.6% to the total (see Table 3). Approximately 38 deaths occurred daily in the month of October. On the other hand, February recorded the least number of marriages contributing 398 or 5.2% to the total, with a daily average of 15 deaths.
As shown in figure 2, the province recorded more male deaths with 4,261 contributing 55.6% to the total. While female deaths contributed 3,398 or 44.4% to the total.

Zamboanga del Norte contributed 27.3% to the total deaths occurred in Region IX. The province fell closely behind the City of Zamboanga, which had the biggest share of registered deaths contributing 27.9% to the region’s total of 28,007. Meanwhile, the City of Isabela contributed the lowest share of deaths with only 2.4%.

Focusing on Zamboanga del Norte, Figure 4 shows that the City of Dipolog recorded the highest number of registered deaths in 2021 with 1,314, followed by the City of Dapitan with 848; Sindangan with 722; Liloy with 385; and Polanco with 375. Approximately 1 in every 2 deaths occurred in these five cities/municipalities. Meanwhile, the municipality of Sirawai had the least number of registered deaths in 2021 with only 54 records.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Vital statistics are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in a civil register. Vital acts and events are the births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and all such events that have something to do with an individual's entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime.
Death refers to the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth has taken place (postnatal cessation of vital function without capability of resuscitation).
