1. Zamboanga Peninsula

Inflation rate in Zamboanga Peninsula accelerated at 4.3 percent in August 2023, from 3.0 percent in July 2023. Inflation in August 2022 was higher at 9.1 percent.
(Table A and Figure 1)

The increase in the region's inflation was mainly bought about by the higher increase in the indices of Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages at 7.1 percent from 4.5 percent in the previous month and Persnonal care, and miscellaneous goods and services at 3.4 percent from 3.2 percent in the previous month.

Also contributing to the overall inflation in Zamboanga Peninsula during the period were the higher annual increments in the indices of the following commodity groups as compared with their previous month's iflation rates:

  • ) Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 5.6 percent from 5.5 percent;
  • ) Clothing and footwear, 2.7 percent from 2.5 percent;
  • ) Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance 3.5 percent from 3.3 percent;
  • )Health, 4.2 percent from 3.9 percent;
  • ) Transport, -0.4 percent from -6.8 percent;
  • ) Recreation, sport and culture, 4.0 percent from 3.3 percent; and

     Food inflation in Zamboanga Peninsula also increased furthur to 7.1 percent in August 2023 from 4.4 percent in July 2023. In August 2022, food iflation was higher at 10.3 percent.

The following food groups recorded to have higher increments:

     a) Cereals and cereal products, 10.1 percent from 5.0 percent;
     b) Fish and other seafood, 3.7 percent from -1.3 percent;
     c) Milk, other dairy products and eggs; 7.3 percent from 7.0 percent and 
     d) Fruits and nuts, 11.6 percent from 7.6 percent;

On the other hand, the following food groups were observed to have lower increments:

     a) Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, -1.3 percent from -1.1 percent;
     b) Oils and fats, 0.9 percent from 4.2 percent;
     c) Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses, 17.5 percent from 18.4 percent;
     d) Sugar, confectionery and desserts, 9.7 percent from 15.0 percent and 
     e) Ready-made food and other food products n.e.c., 5,4 percent from 5.8 percent.

 

Among the provinces and cities in the region, City of Isabela had the highest iflation at 5.5 percent, followed by Zamboanga Del Sur at 5.2 percent, Zamboanga Del Norte at 5.1 percent, City of Zamboanga at 3.5 percent, and  the Zamboanga Sibugay recorded the lowest inflation at 3.0 percent.
