Overall Inflation
Zamboanga del Norte’s inflation for all-income households increased to 2.0 percent from 1.8 percent in November 2024. In December 2023, the inflation rate was comparatively higher posted at 2.9 percent (Figure 1 and Table A).
Attributes in the Uptrend of the Overall Inflation
The uptrend in overall inflation in December 2024 was primarily brought by the higher annual increment in the heavily weighted Transport at -0.1 percent in December 2024 from -2.6 percent in the previous month.
Moreover, higher year-on-year mark-ups were noted in the indices of the following commodity groups during the month:
- Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other fuels, 4.2 percent from 3.4 percent
- Recreation, Sports, and Culture, 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent
- Transport, -0.1 percent from -2.6 percent
- Health, 2.2 percent from 2.0 percent
- Restaurant and Accommodation Services 11.5 percent from 9.5 percent
- Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, 7.3 percent from 7.0 percent
- Personal Care, Miscellaneous Goods, and Services, 2.7 percent from 2.6 percent
In contrast, the following commodity groups registered higher inflation rates during the month:
- Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages, 0.4 percent from 0.9 percent;
- Furnishings, Household Equipments, and Routine Household Maintenance, 4.4 percent from 4.5 percent;
Main Contributors to the Headline Inflation
The top three commodity groups contributing to the December 2024 overall inflation were the following:
- Transport with a 50.4 percent share or -0.1 percentage points;
- Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other fuels with 29.4 percent share or 4.2 percentage points; and
- Restaurants and Accommodation Services with 16.4 percent share or 11.5 percentage points.
Top 5 Contributors in Zamboanga del Norte December 2024 Inflation
- Corn with -12.9 percent inflation from -6.8 percent in the previous month;
- Restaurants, café and the like 11.8 percent from 9.9 percent inflation in the previous month;
- Electricity from all sources with 12.6 percent inflation from 7.0 percent from the previous month;
- Domestic schedules air transport fare with -9.7 percent from -25.1 percent in the previous month; and
- Other pelagic fish, live, fresh, chilled or frozen with -5.9 percent from -12.9 percent inflation from the previous month

Purchasing Power of Peso
In Zamboanga del Norte, the purchasing power of peso was recorded at Php0.80, which explains that you needed Php124.30 for a basket of food and non-food commodities in December 2024 which only costs Php100.00 in the year 2018.
