Zamboanga City


Headline inflation in Zamboanga City eased to 5.0 percent in June 2024 from 
5.1 percent in May 2024. This brings the city’s average inflation from January 2024 to 
June 2024 to 4.0 percent. In June 2023, inflation rate was lower at 3.3 percent. 
(Table A and Figure 1).

The main and only driver on the downtrend of the overall inflation in June 2024 was primarily brought about by the slower annual increment of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages at 4.9 percent during the month from 5.3 percent in May 2024.

In contrast, the indices of the following commodity groups registered higher annual increments:
a.    Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, from 4.5 percent to 4.6 percent
b.    Housing, Electricity, Gas, and Other Fuels, from 7.8 percent to 8.4 percent
c.    Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance, 1.8 percent to 1.9 percent
d.    Health, 2.2 percent to 2.4 percent
e.    Transport, from 1.7 percent to 1.9 percent
f.    Restaurants and Accommodation Services, from 3.0 percent to 3.2 percent
g.    Personal Care, Miscellaneous Goods and Services, from 2.3 percent to 2.4 percent

Meanwhile, the following commodity groups retained their previous month’s inflation rates:
a.    Clothing and Footwear, 1.8 percent
b.    Information and Communication, 1.0 percent
c.    Recreation, Sport, and Culture, 2.0 percent
d.    Education Services, 18.9 percent
e.    Financial Services, 0.0 percent

Food inflation in Zamboanga City for June 2024 slowed down to 5.3 percent from 
5.7 percent in May 2024. In June 2023, food inflation was higher at 5.6 percent.

The main drivers in the downtrend of food inflation in June 2024 was brought about by the lower annual growth rate of the food index of Cereals and cereal products (ND) recorded at 
15.2 percent during the month from 16.3 percent in May 2024. Rice also contributed to lower food inflation at 19.7 percent from 21.3 percent.

The other food indices which recorded a decline in the food inflation in June 2024:
a.    Fish and other Seafood, (3.4) percent from (2.0) percent 
b.    Vegetable, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses, 2.8 percent from 3.8 percent 
Meanwhile, higher year-on-year growth rates were observed in the indices of the following food commodity in June 2024:
a.    Flour, Bread and other Bakery Products, Pasta Products and other Cereals, 5.5 percent from 5.3 percent
b.    Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, (0.2) percent from (0.6) percent
c.    Milk, other dairy products and eggs, 3.1 percent from 1.3 percent
d.    Fruits and nuts, 15.4 percent from 11.6 percent
e.    Ready-made-food and other food products n.e.c, 11.2 percent from 8.9 percent

Food inflation shared 44.4 percent or 2.2 percentage points to the overall inflation in 
June 2024. The top three food groups in terms of contribution to the deceleration of food inflation during the month were the following:

a.    Cereals and cereal products with a share of 40.1 percent or 2.0 percentage points
b.    Vegetable, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses with a share of 1.6 percent or 0.08 percentage points
c.    Fish and other seafood with a share of (4.5) percent or (0.23) percentage points
