Background
It is recognized that statistics on women and men are usually not available in a form accessible to those who are concerned with gender issues. Sometimes, the statistics are difficult to find as they are spread over many and diverse fields and the complex tables in which they are presented are of limited use to most potential users.
This handbook on women and men is an attempt to present statistics in a user-friendly, interesting and easy to understand through simple tables and charts accompanied by brief analyses and short explanatory texts.
This statistical handbook hopes to provide information to planners, researchers and others users to guide them in advocacy work and in the formulation of plans, programs, and policies for the advancement of women.
We wish to acknowledge with appreciation the cooperation and valuable assistance extended to us by the various agencies of the government, the non-governmental organizations and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific in coming up with this publication.
